India’s defense minister says a stampede has killed an unspecified number of people at a major railway station in New Delhi.

At least 15 people died and another 15 were injured in a stampede at the main railway station in India's capital New Delhi on Saturday night, the chief minister of the capital territory told reporters early on Sunday.

Crowds had swelled because trains carrying Hindu pilgrims to the Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious festival, had been delayed, according to local media.

In New Delhi, India, at least 18 people were killed in a stampede at a railway station. Many victims were Hindu pilgrims traveling to the Maha Kumbh festival.

The Delhi high Court noted that this public interest petition raised concerns about the ineffective implementation of provisions in the Railways Act, primarily Sections 57 and 147.

The Delhi high court on Wednesday directed the Railways to fix the issues of sale of platform tickets, and the maximum number of passengers in a train coach, both of which were raised in a public interest litigation (PIL) over the February 15 stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station.
