West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced early Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, that more than 300 members of the state's National Guard would be deployed to Washington, D.C. The deployment follows President Donald Trump's announcement that his administration would take over Washington’s police department for at least a month.

Hundreds more National Guard troops are expected to arrive in Washington, D.C., in the coming days, with at least four Republican-led states offering to send soldiers.

The moves come as federal agents and National Guard troops have begun to appear across the heavily Democratic city after President Trump's executive order earlier this week.
