Meta's model is built using X's open-source algorithm for Community Notes. The notes will show up across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads but won't appear under ads.

Meta began fact checks in December 2016, after President Donald Trump was elected to his first term, in response to criticism that “fake news” was spreading on its platforms. For years, the tech giant boasted it was working with more than 100 organizations in over 60 languages to combat misinformation.

Meta said it will begin testing fact-checking in the U.S. through Community Notes across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads on March 18 onwards and will use the open-source algorithm from rival Elon Musk's X as the basis of its rating system.
