President Donald Trump said Saturday the United States will impose new tariffs on several European countries unless a deal is reached for the purchase of Greenland, escalating his long-running push for US control of the Arctic territory.

The president made the threat while a bipartisan group of US lawmakers were visiting Denmark in the hope of easing tensions over the territory.

A bipartisan congressional delegation met with Danish and Greenlandic officials Friday to show support for Greenland's territorial integrity despite President Trump's push to acquire the island.
