La Salle University president Daniel Allen went back Monday afternoon to the old saying of athletics being the “front porch” to a university when he made a colloquial edit befit of the local vernacular.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A Philadelphia basketball legend will be feeling the love. LaSalle University will honor men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy ahead of his team's final home game on Wednesday night. He is retiring as the all-time winningest coach in Big 5 history.

Fran Dunphy became the 34th head coach in Division I history to reach 1,000 games coached on Wednesday night before his retirement at the end of the year at La Salle.

Coach Fran Dunphy, known as “Mr. Big Five," is heading for retirement, but not before coaching one thousand games.

In stints at Penn, Temple and La Salle, the coach built a basketball legacy by always putting others first. Fran Dunphy walked down the ramp inside University of Dayton Arena in March 2019, answering questions about his final game as the coach at Temple, an NCAA tournament loss to Belmont.

Dunphy, a fixture of Philadelphia basketball for decades as the head coach for Penn, Temple, and then La Salle, is calling it a career.

When La Salle hosts Duquesne on Wednesday night, at the on-campus arena that should have been built at 20th and Olney long before, it will be the 1,000th game of Fran Dunphy’s head coaching career in college basketball.
