Republican legislators in California announced Wednesday that they are sending a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice and to the U.S. Attorneys representing California, calling for a potential federal investigation into who is behind the proposed new congressional maps in California and how they were constructed.
In 2021, all Republican lawmakers voted against H.R. 1, which would have required all states to establish independent redistricting commissions. But the redistricting provisions were one part of the 884-page bill, and Republicans said they opposed it for various reasons, not just because of the redistricting provision.
The legislation is expected to pass Thursday, which means it would go before voters in a Nov. 4 special election.
Missouri's GOP vice chair expects to see a special session called after the Trump White House and the national RNC agree on how to redraw Missouri's congressional districts to weaken Democratic voting power around Kansas City.
The Texas House is scheduled to try convening a quorum again at noon, with absent Democrats expected to return.
"Trump is trying to steal the 2026 election by rigging the system and changing electoral maps," the event's website states. "We are fighting back."
