Check out amazing footage of a graceful Swallow-tailed Kite catching lizards by Photographer-in-Residence R J Wiley. Swallow-tailed Kites spend spring and summer breeding season in Florida and other parts of the South. They often make nests at the Sanctuary, and visitors can sometimes see the birds soaring overhead from the boardwalk. The nesting season for these beautiful raptors is now in full swing. In Florida, eggs are typically laid in March and require around 28 days to incubate. Both pare

A juvenile swallow-tailed kite was recently brought to FWH after it was discovered to have plastic wrapped around its legs. It was very young and unable to be re-nested. Our staff noticed it wouldn’t eat from the bowls, so they slowly started stacking the food higher up, and sure enough, the kite started eating just fine! We transferred it to the Avian Reconditioning Center, where they specialize in swallow-tailed kites. Once it’s old enough they will release it back into the wild! #FloridaWildl

They're here! Swallow-tailed Kites are migratory birds of prey that spend fall and winter in Central or South America and return in early spring to start their breeding season in Florida and the Southeast. Next time you're on the boardwalk, keep an eye to the skies for these graceful raptors. | Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

The Swallow-tailed Kite is a hawk that only spends the summer with us, but its arrival from a winter home in the American tropics in late February or early March has long been heralded as a signal of the arrival of spring. Recently, we were happy to release this Swallow-tailed Kite back into their natural habitat! Our facility does not receive any government funding, so we need your help to allow us to keep helping Florida's raptors! Wildlife rehabilitation is a team effort, exemplified by this Swallow-tailed Kite that was transferred to our facility. The kite needed extensive care and resources, which we were able to supply! Although having no severe flesh or skeletal injuries, this kite had heavily damaged feath

⚠️Rare Patient Intake⚠️ This Swallow-Tailed Kite was found in Plantation Florida on the ground by a tree. The rescuers discovered that it was lethargic and brought it into our center. When it arrived, our veterinary staff found that it was extremely dehydrated and short of breath. We rarely see these birds of prey this far south but that is a great sign for the biodiversity of our local ecosystem. If you find a sick, injured or orphaned animal in the wild give us a call at 954-524-4302, we are o

Swallow tailed kites travel 5,000 miles from South America to nest in Florida every year. They're one of my favorites. Elvis is not impressed. What's your favorite bird or birds? I love all the kites! Especially Everglades kites. #cat #elviswestley #cerebellarhypoplasia | Tre Gatti Farms

Enjoy a Wednesday wind down with the sweet sounds of Swallow-tailed Kites at a communal roost. Georgia is one of only 7 states that make up the Swallow-tailed Kite's breeding range in the U.S. In spring, they travel here from their wintering grounds in South America to nest in tall trees in or near floodplains. Around August, they make their return trip. In the mornings, they show off impressive aerial acrobatics as they forage over agricultural fields, fattening up on insects for the long journ

Look up above! Swallow-tailed kites are migrating to our state and can be seen soaring high above doing stunning aerial acrobatics. They migrate to Florida to breed in February-March and leave starting in August. Our tall trees are critical habitat for their nesting. You can identify a swallow-tailed kite by their long, forked tail feathers. In the video below, our permanent resident Diva is showing off their wingspan in the sun.
