In October 1638 a church in Widecombe-in-the-Moor, England, was hit by a fiery ball during a storm. Witnesses said the orb filled the building with a sulfur odor and thick smoke, killing four and injuring about sixty. The event is an example of ball lightning, a phenomenon noted as early as 1195 by Gervase of Canterbury. Nestled away in South Yorkshire lies a British wildlife gem; RSPB Old Moor. The landscape at RSPB Old Moor may be bustling full of life now, but it wasn’t always this way. A group of miners who were keen birders helped establish the reserve and used it as a place to come to during breaks between shifts in the local coal mines.
