On Tuesday, March 1, 1881, at 3 p.m., #Ocala Town Marshal Burrell Dawkins was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man in the downtown square. Marshal Dawkins, a 38-year-old Black man, was the first known #lawenforcement officer killed in the line of duty in the history of Ocala.
